FAQs

What is Superfast Broadband?

Superfast Broadband uses a system called WBC Fibre to the Cabinet – also known as VDSL, to provide a high speed ‘fibre optic’ connection over existing BT phone lines.

As the name suggests, Fibre to the Cabinet connects telephone exchanges to green street cabinets using fibre optic links. The link between the cabinet and your property is normally a copper line.

Using the latest technology, the service will automatically provide you with the fastest broadband speed your phone line can physically support, up to a maximum of 76Mbps (downstream) and 19Mbps (upstream).

What is the stabilisation period?

This is a 10 day period from when you first connect to Superfast Broadband, i.e. login and use the internet for a period of more than 15 minutes.

During this period your line is automatically attempting to establish its maximum stable rate. You may notice some variations in speed and your connection may be intermittent at times whilst your maximum line rate is established.

During this stabilisation period we recommend disconnecting and reconnecting if your line is unstable. This will ensure your line rate is set at its optimum level.

What are the benefits of Superfast Broadband?

You should notice a greater quality and reliability when running multiple tasks, and faster speeds when uploading and downloading large files, streaming music or video, sending and receiving large emails, and when there are multiple users on the one connection.

What speed can I expect on Superfast Broadband?

The service will automatically provide you with the fastest broadband speed your phone line can physically support, up to a maximum of 76Mbps (downstream) and 19Mbps (upstream).

The actual speed you will receive depends on a number of factors:

  • Principally how close you are to the green street cabinet (the nearer you are, the faster the speed you can expect).
  • The quality of the actual copper phone line (between the cabinet and your property).
  • There are also other things that can affect your connection speed – such as the length and quality of any phone wiring / extensions in your home or office, and the speed of your company network (LAN).
Will Superfast Broadband run at it’s maximum speed all the time?

Your speed may change throughout the day. It may slow down during peak times, or when other broadband users connect to the same exchange as you.

What protection does DDoS Protect offer?

A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is an attempt to make a computer or network device unavailable to legitimate users. A common attack method is to bombard an attack target with massive volumes of requests to open a connection. The target host cannot cope with such a large number of session requests and simply stops responding, rendering it useless. The DDoS attack also swamps your Internet connection, blocking traffic from legitimate sources.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are rising in frequency across the UK and all businesses – no matter what size or industry – are potential targets. The scale and intensity of these attacks is increasing with almost 278 DDoS attacks taking place globally every hour.

Our supplier has invested in a new state-of-the-art Cisco and Arbor powered network with embedded DDoS protection, which protects not only our supplier’s network but also our customers’ networks 24/7/365. Offering the highest level accreditations with the world’s most trusted security vendors, there’s nobody better placed to keep you protected.

All new products now include DDoS Protect.

How long does it take to install Broadband?

It can vary, i.e.

New Connections normally take 4-10 working days.

Migrations may take a little longer, e.g. 10-15 working days.

Please note Simultaneous or ‘SIM’ Provides, where we simultaneously provide Broadband along with a new Analogue (PSTN) phone line, may delay things further.

Can I use my existing router / modem?
